PREFACE

On the use of this little volume I would be fain say two things which lie upon my heart.
The 1st is this: that the Christian who desires to do use of it must not be content simply to see and to understand the portion for the day, but must take time to meditate upon it and to appropriate it. I am positive that one chief cause why several do not grow much in grace is that they do not take time to hold converse with the Lord in secret. Spiritual, divine truth makes not thus become our possession at once. Though I understand what I read, though I consent cordially to it, though I obtain it, it may quickly fade away and be forgotten, unless by private meditation I give it time to become fixed and frozen in me, to become united and known with me.
